I'm Bob, a 30-year-old Software Engineer living in Sunnyvale, CA. I spend my days working at an awesome bay area startup which is still currently in stealth mode. I previously worked in R&D at DreamWorks Animation on the rendering team.
I graduated from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, where I received my M.S. in Computer Science in 2012 and my B.S. in Computer Engineering in 2010.
My strongest skills lie in graphics, through I'm also reasonably good with (and enjoy) embedded systems and security. I'm a definitely a bit of a polymath. I've dabbled in projects ranging from synchronizing the Christmas lights on my house to music, to designing vehicle electronics for the Cal Poly Supermileage Team, to researching a feed-forward, asynchronous messaging and shading method for ray tracing large scenes across clusters of commodity machines.
I also did a stint at Cisco Systems, where I wrote an internal SNMP performance testing tool for their biggest and baddest core routers, and worked in their R&D group developing UI prototypes for some patent-pending tech that, sadly, I can't talk about.
If you'd like to get in contact, you can reach me at firstname.lastname@example.org or (661) 619-1457.
My blog is entitled SIGTTOU. That's the UNIX signal that a process is sent when it's in the background and tries to write to the terminal. I like to think of my blog as the place where all my background projects get to write to the terminal.
Sadly, the blog is down for maintenance at the moment. Hopefully I'll get some free time soon to bring it back to life.
Once I get a bit more time on my hands, I'll detail some of my coolest projects here.
For now, check out some awesome videos!
If you think I'm interesting, you should follow me on Twitter. Fair warning, though: I'm not a very big Twitter user and mostly use it to publicly shame companies when they have poor customer service. You might not find that very interesting.@bobsomers
My resume is a single page in Adobe PDF format. Unfortunately I haven't had the need to update it in years, so it doesn't include my latest work at DreamWorks Animation or the stealth mode startup.Download Resume
If you're a recruiter, feel free to shoot me an email, but be forewarned that I have, without a doubt, the absolute coolest job in Silicon Valley right now. This is not an exaggeration. I'm not actively looking for employment.
